This program is designed to prepare the student to enter the work force as an Electrocardiograph technician. Upon completion of this program, graduates will possess the skills and knowledge to become employed as entry level Electrocardiograph Aides, in hospitals, out-patient centers, clinics, diagnostic labs, medical centers and other medical facilities.

This program trains individuals to perform electrocardiogram tests including basic 12-lead EKG’s and basic arrhythmias. The hands-on training introduces the student to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, 12 lead placement and interpretation. Students will be introduced to Holter Monitor procedure. Holter Monitors are portable recording devices worn by patients. The device records data and analyze its inputs. EKG technicians can then further study the results and forward them to the physician to assist them in diagnosing heart ailments, such as heart rhythm abnormalities or problems with pacemakers. Students will learn the cardiovascular system and its functions and pathology of diseases, law and ethics relative to the electrocardiograph aide and duty function in the medical chain of command. Students will demonstrate knowledge and apply skills in using medical instrumentation modalities relevant to the function of an electrocardiograph aide.


Electrocardiogram (EKG) Technician

The EKG technician course teaches students how to perform EKGs to monitor and record the heart electrical impulses. This course will also go into how to accurately read, monitor and report EKG test, interpret data, perform calculations, and communicate effectively with other healthcare professional. 

Structure and Function of the Cardiovascular System & Related Medical Terminology

This course is designed to provide theory on the cardiovascular system, its structure and function in the human body. Students will learn the composition of the heart, its blood flow, layers of the heart, cardiac muscle, heart valves, cardiac cycles, heart rate and the pathology of diseases. Students will demonstrate skills in related terminology.


Laws and Ethical Standards of Electrocardiography

In this course students will learn the laws that govern Electrocardiography, its instrumentation, context of clinical setting, and the ethical responsibilities of the Electrocardiography Aide.


EKG Instrumentation and Modalities

Students will develop skills and knowledge of procedures for the use and maintenance of Electrocardiography instruments, equipment and supplies. Students will practice the various modalities, and the procedures for client preparation.


Patient Preparation and Care Procedures

This course is designed to provide the knowledge and practice of patient preparation for electrocardiography. Students will learn communication techniques involved in instructing patients, the physical handling of patients, preparing the area for testing, the positioning of leads and the use of gels and other substances, and supplies utilized in the testing procedure.
